Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the opposition Law and Justice party has sent an open letter to Prime Minister Donald Tusk in which he calls for the “proper defence and security” of Poland.
The letter, which is published in the conservative-catholic Nasz Dziennik daily, asks the government head whether he realises the responsibility of securing Poland’s sovereignty.
“Since 1999 [the year of Poland’s NATO entry], we can observe a process of the progressively authoritarian stance of the Russian authorities and a number of other developments […] which aim to affirm a sphere of interests seen under communist times.”
Jaroslaw Kaczynski refers to energy security in the letter, stating that Russia uses raw materials for energy production as a political tool.
“The [Russian] gas wars with Ukraine and Belarus, efforts to destabilise the current state of security in the Euro-Atlantic area, and aggression towards an independent Georgia; this is proof that Russia wants […] to return to a group of superpowers that decide upon the world’s fate,” writes Kaczynski.
The leader of Law and Justice also maintains that even though Poland and other countries in the region joined the Alliance eleven years ago, no defence infrastructure has been put in place in the newer member states.
It is for this reason that Kaczynski demands questions to be asked about Poland’s real security guarantee as ensured by Article 5 on mutual defence by NATO member states. (jb)
