From midnight last night till 22.00 CET on Sunday, all opinion polls, electioneering and political agitation are banned in Poland in what is known as a period of ‘election silence’, with Poles voting in local elections on 21 November.Politicians are prohibited from organizing marches and demonstrations, distributing leaflets and putting up posters to encourage a vote for individual candidates.
During the period of election silence posters and leaflets displayed during the campaign on advertising billboards may remain there, but must be removed from cars or buses.
Action directed at encouraging voters to take part in the local election for presidents and mayors of cities and towns and local councillors is allowed, however.
Election silence also covers the internet, where similar rules apply. Material placed on web sites before midnight last night can remain but any new information is prohibited from being uploaded onto the web.
