Rogue MP to join forces with the Left?

14.12.2010

Media reports that there is a possibility that ex-Civic Platform MP Janusz Palikot’s political movement may start from the same electoral list as the Democratic Left Alliance in next year’s general election.

The former Civic Platform rebel has not denied the possibility, although has declared that even though it is too early to say whether his movement will team up with the Democratic Left Alliance, Palikot told the daily Polska The Times that the Left should join forces.

“The leaders of the [Movement for the Support of Palikot] will be chosen by the end of February,” the politician informs the daily, adding that any decision to join up with the Democratic Left Alliance “would only be possible with the firm support of the [party’s] leaders, and whether this time it will be possible to separate Church from State.”

The comment comes after Janusz Palikot decided to resign from the ruling Civic Platform in October after criticism that Donald Tusk’s government was too conservative.

Marek Wikinski, a member of the Democratic Left Alliance has said that his party should be open to new political milieux. “During this [general] election we can bring in a few dozen new people, including [liberal university professor] Magdalena Sroda, Janusz Palikot, or people involved with the [left-leaning] Krytyka Polityczna periodical,” Wikinski told Polska The Times.

The daily concludes that the joint electoral lists of Janusz Palikot and the Democratic Left Alliance could give a boost of a few percent to the election outcome. Recent polls have given Janusz Palikot’s new association around 1-2 percent if ballots were to be held presently. (jb)
