Convicts give Christmas care to furry friends

15.12.2010

Prisoners in south-eastern Poland have been helping animal shelters in the region, which are badly in need of materials and other forms of aid, especially in winter time.

“Severe frost is affecting our four-legged friends badly,”  says spokesman for the district prison service inspectorate Jaroslaw Wojtowicz. “Winter is the time when animals in shelters need special help.”

Prison authorities have decided to hand over old blankets and mattresses, slated for recycling, to animal shelters. While they are nor suitable for people any more, they can very well help keep dogs and cats warm.

A group of inmates in the Rzeszow prison have been working on a voluntary basis in a local animal shelter, while prisoners from Debica have made more than 20 kennels over the past few months. (kk)
