Highlanders from the Podhale region in southern Poland are wondering whether to move into their stables or barns to get out of paying high tax.The move may come after by-laws in Poland’s south stipulate that stables, barns, or sheds which used to be for sheltering livestock are now considered to be luxury items.
According to local bureaucrats in the southern resort town of Zakopane, the tax by-law is a relic of the old communist regime in Poland.
However, the result has meant that the taxes paid on such buildings are a few times higher than the actual homes in which the highlanders live. In order to get round this, highlanders may find themselves moving into the barns or sheds to avoid the payments.
