Constitutional abortion amendment divides politicians

10.03.2007
Politicians fail to reach a consensus on proposed changes in the constitution guaranteeing protection of life from the moment of conception.

The conflict over the proposals – which would put a total ban on abortion, for any reason, into the constitution – cuts across and within political parties. The deputies warn that the voting on the amendments may be difficult and the parliamentary club discipline can be broken.

The amendments are strongly supported by the League of Polish Families (LPR), the catholic nationalist junior coalition member.
LPR considers that the present law on the protection of life to be very ‘fragile and can be easily broken’.

LPR members of parliament consider that the adoption of the amendment will put an end to the debates and assure that no attempts are made to support abortion, or liberalize laws.

The ruling Law and Justice party, plus as opposition Civic Platform, support the status qu6, where abortion is illegal except in circumstances where the pregnancy could endanger the mothers life, the fetus is diagnosed with a significant deformity, or if the pregnancy is the result of rape. (pg)
