Marek Kuchciński on Civic Platform and vetting law

18.05.2007
Marek Kuchciński, President of ruling Law and Justice, thinks that opposition Civic Platform should clearly state whether it wants to join the common project for the ‘national repair’, or get closer to post-communist parties.

Marek Kuchciński said on Polish radio 1 today that in the past Civic Platform declared its readiness to participate in the “cleaning the country”. However, as Kuchciński implies, some circles connected with Civic Platform may want to get closer to post-communists.

President of the parliamentary club Law and Justice wants the archives to be opened for scientists and journalists as soon as possible, after the Constitutional Tribunal ruled the present act unconstitutional last Friday. According to him, it is possible that work on amending the Vetting Act concerning this case could start in Parliament next week.

As Kuchciński stressed, the Constitutional Tribunal has severely damaged this act. MP Kuchcński reckons that the Tribunal’s decision has led to a situation in which scientists cannot work on crucial facts concerning Polish history, since they do not have access to the documents.

Marek Kuchciński reminded that 1500 scientists from Poland and abroad study the history of Poland and Central Europe using the archives.

In Kuchciński’s opinion, the fact that Tusk’s party seems to be favourable towards the amendment of the Vetting Act, which is to make the archives available to journalists, is a sign of a possible agreement.
