Lech Wałęsa reacts aggressively to president Lech Kaczyński’s interview

20.06.2007
Lech Wałęsa used an offensive and derogatory word on his website to describe president Kaczyński for the interview given to the news channel France24.

In the said interview published on 15 June, Lech Kaczyński made numerous serious accusations towards Wałęsa who, as transpired from the president’s conversation with a French journalist, betrayed the ideals of the Solidarity.

First, Wałęsa looked for support among the most radical part of the society - anticommunists, and then he strengthened his power using the former communist secret service, Lech Kaczyński said.

Kaczyński said that democracy in Poland was under serious threat until 1995 (end of Wałęsa’s presidency) and that he was relieved by Kwaśniewski’s success in the presidential election.

"Kwaśniewski may belong to a different political option than myself, but he has posed less threat to the democracy in Poland than Wałęsa".

The interview has been quoted on Lech Wałęsa’s internet site, where the ex-president comments: "There is only one appropriate word: son of a b... ". The former president adds that so far “he has defended those people abroad", but "now it is all over ". (mj)
