Kaczyński and Tusk: Autumn election inevitable

10.08.2007
“President Lech Kaczyński and head of the largest opposition party in parliament, Civic Platform’s (PO) Donald Tusk, believe that a general election cannot be avoided in the present situation”, said Michał Kamiński, secretary of state at the presidential chancellery. Donald Tusk said the election was likely to be held in October.

“President Lech Kaczyński and Civic Platform (PO) leader Donald Tusk agree that the existing parliament should still pass a number of laws which are key for Poland”, Michał Kamiński said after the meeting.

He added that one of such new law should be an act on Poland’s accession to the Schengen zone.

Kamiński also stressed that the president and PO leader agreed that every effort should be made to ensure “a calm and dignified atmosphere” in the Sejm until the election.

“I shall speak tentatively: the election will be held in October”, said Donald Tusk at a press conference after the meeting. “We have to bring to an end all the mess that is on the increase in Poland. The president and I have agreed that an early election in necessary. October is the most likely time for that”, said Tusk.

Head of PO added that making changes in the election ordinance before the election was out of question. He also ensured that himself and the president would be campaigning among the parliamentarians to support a vote for self dissolution of the Sejm.
