Secret services chief denies cover up

07.11.2007

Secret services coordinator in Poland responds to allegations on destroying secret records.

Minister Zbigniew Wassermann, secret services coordinator, held a press conference on Wednesday afternoon in response to the press allegations that PM Jarosław Kaczyński’s decree, regulating procedures for archiving and destroying documents of the Internal Security Agency (ABW), was intended to eliminate compromising evidence of illegal operations conducted by ABW under Kaczyński’s rule.

Wassermann ensured that the decree was only aimed at regulating the procedures in respect of destruction of documents and denied any covert political agenda.

The secret services coordinator stressed that before the decree came into effect, decisions in respect of if and what documents were to be destroyed had been made by heads of departments and that the new law provided additional safety and control over “obligatory destruction of some files and records”.

Zbigniew Wassermann added that the parliamentary committee for secret services had approved Kaczyński’s decree.
