Lepper charged with corruption and sexual harassment

09.11.2007

Andrzej Lepper, former deputy premier and Self Defence leader heard two charges from the prosecution in Łódź on Thursday.  He is accused of corruption and attempted sexual harassment, and may be looking at up to eight years in prison.

In the prosecutor’s office Lepper was accompanied by two lawyers, Wiesław Żurawski and Robert Dzięciołowicz.  The questioning lasted for nearly three hours.  After the interrogation, Dzięciołowicz said that the interrogation had been carried out in a civilised and appropriate manner.

“Mr. Lepper should remain optimistic about the results”, said the lawyer.

“I pleaded not guilty, because the alleged facts never took place.  There’s nobody who could confirm that”, Lepper told journalists after the interrogation.  He said he was sad that the prosecution believed Aneta Krawczyk (who was demanded sexual favours in return for her professional advancement.) rather than himself.

“Someone who doesn’t even know who the father of her child is, leaves the prosecution office as a reliable witness, not as the accused”, he said.

Krzysztof Kopania, the spokesman of the prosecutor’s office in Łódź said that Lepper had only made a short statement and refused to answer the prosecution and his lawyers’ questions.

Andrzej Lepper was released on bail of 50 thousand zlotys, but his legal representatives will appeal the decision.
