Renata Beger (Self Defence) on trial again

21.11.2007

The Polish Radio News Agency (IAR) reports that the proceedings against Renata Beger, former Self Defence MP, commence before the District Court in Piła (Central Poland) on Wednesday.

The former parliamentary is charged with forgery during the election campaign in 2001.

In the opinion of the prosecution, Beger knowingly used so-called letters of support with forged signatures and personal details of individuals who never gave their consent for that.

The said letters were submitted to the Circular Electoral Committee before the election.

The court proceedings have now to be repeated for procedural reasons.  The District Court in Poznań has ruled that the judgement by the Court in Piła in June 2006 was made only by one instead of three judges, as required by law.

After the first trial, between November 2004 and June 2006, Renata Beger was sentenced to 2 years’ imprisonment suspended for 5 years and fined 30 thousand zlotys plus 54 thousand of court fees.

The court heard more than 1700 witnesses who denied having given any form of support to the accused former Self Defence MP.
