President should be more cooperative says speaker of parliament

29.11.2007

Speaker of the Lower House Bronisław Komorowski (Civic Platform - PO) told Polish Radio 3 on Thursday morning that Donald Tusk’s government counted on a co-operation regarding foreign policy with the president, but stressed that the government should have the last say in this respect.

Bronisław Komorowski said that according to his interpretation, the constitution gave the government more power to set foreign policy goals and stressed that it was premier and foreign minister who conducted the Polish foreign policy, while the constitution only mentioned that the president should be consulted.

The speaker of the Lower House said he expected good co-operation between president Lech Kaczyński and PM Donald Tusk, especially in the issues regarding relations with those countries where heads of states had a strong position.

On the subject of Wednesday’s decision to withdraw from vetoing Russia’s access to OECD, Komorwski said it was a step forward to improve diplomatic relations between Warsaw and Moscow.  He believes Poland and Russia should talk to each other directly, not only via EU. (mj)
