Prime Minister criticizes opposition leader

15.03.2008

PM Donald Tusk, currently at the EU summit in Brussels, has accused Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski of being extremely irresponsible on the issue of the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty.

The PM was commenting on the row that erupted earlier this week after PiS demanded a preamble to be put back into the treaty and widening the range of opt outs available to Poland.

"All information that I am receiving from Poland show that something very wrong has happened with the level of responsibility, not high as it is, shown recently by the leader of Law and Justice," said Tusk after a session in Brussels.

According to the PM, the recent statements and actions of Jaroslaw Kaczynski must be deemed extremely irresponsible, because they undermine Poland's interests in such a key moment as the European Summit. "What the Law and Justice chairman has done in Poland is making our negotiations on, among others matters, the climate-energy package difficult. And we negotiated big money for this," said the PM.

Tusk assessed that Poland's credibility has diminished during the last few days, because other EU members had the right to expect that the Lisbon Treaty would be ratified without difficulty, as the ruling coalition is unequivocally pro-European and the biggest opposition party negotiated the document.
