PM not surprised with presidential media bill veto

17.05.2008

Polish PM Donald Tusk has said that the President’s veto on the broadcasting bill was not a surprise.

Prime Minister Tusk said he was expecting President Kaczynski to “defend the [opposition party] Law and Justice’s dominance in the public media.”

Donald Tusk said that he knew that the President wasn’t going to be helpful because he was the one that helped the previous government of Law and Justice to appropriate the public media and he is not going to help to retake them.

The PM, who is on an official trip to Peru, said that he is not emotionally attached to the broadcasting law. More important for him is the bill on abolishing licensing fees.

The vetoed amendment included changes to the way of appointing members of the National Broadcasting Council, as well as boards of directors and management boards of the public media.

President Kaczynski explained that he opposed the bill, because he believed that passing it would lead to making public media ever more commercial and limiting its influence in society. (jm)
