Poland’s PM as fit as a fiddle?

07.08.2008

In what critics say is merely a political stunt, Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has decided to release his medical records today, which will show he is ‘blooming with health’.

According to the Fakt daily, which says it has seen results of the PM’s check up, the head of the government has only a slightly increased level of cholesterol and some minor problems with his spine, but otherwise everything is just fine.

Prime Minister Tusk, a keen footballer, had his blood pressure taken, as well as undergoing blood tests, a chest X-ray and a heart scan.

Professor Zbigniew Gaciong, in charge of the evaluation of the PM’s health, said that Tusk has no detectable symptoms of any disease.

The report on the PM’s health is being published after a dispute in Poland concerning the need to make the state of the health of public officials public after MP Janusz Palikot of the ruling Civic Platform speculated on his blog whether President Lech Kaczynski has an ‘alcohol problem’.

In Poland publishing health reports by the state officials is voluntary. President Lech Kaczynski refused to make his medical condition public. Government critics say that the publishing of the PM’s medical records is a political stunt aimed at forcing the President to release his. (jm)
