Poll points to Civic Platform with majority in parliament

12.09.2008

As many as 47 percent of voters declared their support for Civic Platform (PO), giving it a majority in the Sejm, a poll by GfK Polonia pollster reveals.

If elections were held this week then this percentage of the popular vote would translate into PO with 309 seats in parliament and allow for single-handed rule.

The largest opposition party in Poland Law and Justice (PiS) enjoys the support of just 18 percent of voters, which would translate into 117 MPs.

The only other party which would be represented in Parliament would be the Left Democratic Alliance (SLD) with only 5 percent of the votes and 32 MPs.

The poll also revealed that the number of people ready to take part in elections constantly decreases. In August as many as 67 percent of Poles declared their willingness to vote while in September this number dropped to 63 percent only.

The poll was conducted for Rzeczpospolita daily on 5-7 September on a representative sample of 979 adult Poles. (jm)
