Early election rumoured in Poland

15.09.2008

Poland’s largest opposition party suspects that the government will call snap elections to tie-in with European Parliament ballots scheduled for 2009.

According to the spokesman of the Law and Justice (PiS) oppositional party, Adam Bielan, rumours he has heard from members of the ruling Civic Platform (PO) suggest that they are seriously considering combining the 2009 European Parliament election with a parliamentary election in Poland.

“I don’t know if they have made the decision, but for some reason, Civic Platform have given the OK for a public smear campaign against their coalition ally the Polish Peasants’ Party (PSL).  This would not be the case if they intended to continue to govern with PSL in peace for three more years”, Bielan explained on the private RMF FM radio station, Monday morning.

The Law and Justice spokesman said that PM Donald Tusk’s unrealistic announcement made at the Economic Forum in Krynica last week, that Poland would adopt the euro by 2011 was suspicious and could be intended as a “catchy slogan for a possible early election campaign”.

“I don’t think [Tusk had consulted it with his ministers”, before the announcement, Bielan added.

In Bielan’s opinion, the latest opinion polls – which indicate that Civic Platform would gain a majority in the Sejm, the Polish parliament, are tempting Donald Tusk’s party into calling early elections. (mj)
