Walesa to pay 7,500 zloty for slander settlement

26.09.2008

The Regional Court of Gdańsk, on the Baltic Seacoast, has ordered Lech Walesa, former Polish president and Solidarity leader, to pay 7,500 zloty (2,230 euro) in damages to Krzysztof Wyszkowski for slander.

Wyszkowsi, former member of the Solidarity movement, took Walesa to court for calling him a “cut-throat monkey,” a “crazy” and an “imbecile.” The court is also requiring Walesa to pay the legal fees.

The judge, Michal Sznura, in the official decision statement, said that Wyszkowski’s personal character was slandered.

Wyszkowski has expressed his dissatisfaction with the court’s ruling, claiming that he sought a 50,000 zloty (14,800 euro) settlement. (mmj)
