PiS against education reform for 6 year olds

30.09.2008

The opposition Law and Justice party (PiS) claims that schools are unprepared for the planned education reform bill, which would lower the school age from seven-years-old to six.

According to the head of PiS, Przemyslaw Gosiewski, Polish schools are unprepared for accepting six- and seven-year-olds at the same time, which would be necessary in the first year of the reform. Accepting twice the amount of children could increase the number of pupils in classes to over 40.

Gosiewski announced that his party will take the side of the parents protesting against the reform. He claims that the party is in contact with almost 20,000 parents who are against the planned changes.

The politician stressed that PiS is not against specifically lowering the school age, but adds that the process needs to be spread over a couple of years and be well-prepared. He said that his party will try to block the changes to the education bill in the senate. (mo)
