Left makes condition for alliance with government

08.12.2008

Leader of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) Grzegorz Napieralski told Polish Radio One this morning that his party is ready to form an alliance with the government but only as an equal partner, and not “an attachment”.

Napieralski was commenting on last week’s statement by Speaker of the lower house of parliament, Bronislaw Komorowski, that the ruling Civic Platform party is likely to enter into a parliamentary alliance with the leftist SLD, if President Kaczynski continues to veto governmental bills.

Recently, President Kaczynski has vetoed numerous bills, including half of the six on health reform.

The head of SLD was unsure, however, of the status of the alliance plans by the government: “This is a very interesting declaration, unfortunately it is not uniform, because only a few hours after Prime Minister Donald Tusk was saying something completely different,” said Napieralski.

“If we are treated as partners, I can not exclude that we will reach an agreement. But we need to be partners not just an attachment to the Civic Platform,” he explained.
