The education reform bill has been opposed by parents' movements and teachers' unions.
President Lech Kaczyński has decided to veto the education reform bill lowering the threshold of compulsory schooling from seven to six years of age.
The amendment to the education law has been rejected by the president on the grounds that the ongoing recession was not the appropriate time for carrying out the reform. Lech Kaczyński has also argued that the reform bill was ill-prepared.
Another reservation voiced by the head of state was that the system overhaul, which includes plans of boosting the number of five-year-old children attending kindergartens, may lead to a deficit of places for three- and four-year-olds.
