More than half of Poles are overweight or obese, according to the European Centre of Obesity Treatment for Children and Adults, which this March has launched a special campaign to thin down the Polish population.
The campaign was joined by Polish Radio and leading daily Gazeta Wyborcza, which started to promote a healthy (and thin) lifestyle. Now a regional campaign has launched in southern Poland, where 37 localities have opened free-of-charge medical advisory services, with a personal touch from those who have succeeded in losing the spare kilogrammes.
Against popular opinion, traditional Polish cooking doesn’t have to be fat and stodgy. In past ages, table traditions varied greatly between the richer and poorer representatives of the society… In the opinion of some observers, Poles keep behaving as though they had inherited the mentality of those who usually went hungry.
