Polska! Year opens in the UK under Royal Patronage

The National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra from Katowice performs in London’s Cadogan Hall tonight. The concert inaugurates Polska! Year.

The programme of the concert features music by Polish composers Andrzej Panufnik, Witold Lutoslawski and Mieczysław Karlowicz. Britain’s Tasmin Little appears as soloist in Karlowicz’s Violin Concerto. Jacek Kaspszyk is the conductor. 

On Saturday, the National Polish Radio SO will perform Penderecki’s St Luke Passion in Canterbury Cathedral, with the composer conducting.

The Polska! Year festival is the broadest and most spectacular presentation of Polish culture abroad in many years. Its motto is ‘ccontemporary everything from Poland’. It comprises close on 200 projects presenting a cross-section of achievements in Polish  theatre,  film, the visual arts, music, design and architecture. The festival will  last until May 2010 and will be held in many cities, including Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Belfast and Norwich.
