Warsaw International Book Fair

22.05.2009

Five hundred participants and thousands of visitors are taking part in the  54th edition of the Warsaw International Book Fair - the biggest book fair in this part of Europe underway in Poland's capital. The Palace of Culture and Science is hosting almost all of Poland’s publishing houses and plenty of representatives from more than thirty  countries.

Danuta Isler reports

During the four day event bookworms will have many opportunities to meet their favorite writers. One of the most famous participants is a Czech poet Jiri Grusa as well as Claudio Magris, an Italian writer especially known for his fascination with Central Europe. The Trieste-based author is regularly listed as a one of the candidates for the Nobel Price in literature.

The fair has gathered Poland’s top shelf writers including Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz and Hanna Krall. As has been customary, the organisers invited one publisher to be an honorary guest of the Fair. This year, however, instead of  a singular country it is the Council of Europe celebrating its 60th anniversary.
