Patriot missiles to be placed in Poland

25.05.2009

In an interview with Polish Radio, deputy defense minister Stanislaw Komorowski says that Patriot missiles will be transferred to Poland from Germany by the end of the year, if the legal status of the US troops that accompany them can be agreed.

Danuta Isler reports

Around 100 patriot missiles and 100 American troops will be stationed in Poland, though no date has yet been set for their deployment.  Poland’s ministries of foreign affairs and defense are to present detailed information on the location of the Patriot batteries in Poland within days. Deputy defense minister Stanislaw Komorowski tells Polish Radio  that negotiations could be concluded by July.

Reports, however, emerged late last week that the Patrios would lack warheads. According to Elizabeth Hibner, a Pentagon spokesperson, the missiles are, “to be placed in Poland only for training and exercise purposes," so they will not have any combat value – though this has not been confirmed by Poland's defense ministry.
