Danuta Isler reports
This is the 21st time that the winning photographs have arrived to Poland’s capital. Among them is the black-and-white photo by the American artist Anthony Suau which won the top accolade of the 2008 contest. All in all, over 96, 000 photographs by five and a half thousand photographers were submitted to the jury of the 52nd World Press Photo contest.
Poland is the second most successful winner this year after Italy with four male photohrapghers and one female scoring the prizes often referred to as the Oscar of the Photography. Justyna Mielnikiewicz and Kacper Kowalski received Second Prize (in the categories People and Events and Arts and Entertainment Stories, respectively) and Third Prize went to Wojciech Grzedzinski, Tomasz Wiech and Tomasz Gudzowaty (First Prize winner in 1999 and 2003). The only Dutch winner of this year’s contest is a photojournalist Roger Cremens, who was awarded for his unusual story about the Auschwitz Museum in the Arts and Entertainment category.
The exhibition is on display at the Zlote Tarasy shopping mall – for the first time in Poland’s capital for free - till July 1. Brought to Poland by EKPictures it will be shown later in Krakow and Opole. The winning photographs can also be viewed at www.worldpressphoto.org.
