Horse-drawn carriages in both Krakow and Zakopane are under scrutiny as cab drivers keep insisting on making their horses stand or work for hours at a time in temperatures over 30 degrees centigrade, often with tragic consquences.
Report by John Beauchamp
A few days after an horse-carriage incident in Krakow injured six tourists, the Municipal Council banned the cabs in the Main Market Square between 12 and 3pm. However, with temperatures still soaring, news came of a carriage taking tourists up to the mountain lake of Morskie Oko in the heart of the Tatra Mounatins. One of the horses was so badly treated due to heat and exhaustion that it simply fell over and died a few days later. Reactions to the event quickly ensued.
