The old Jewish quarter of Kazimerz is one of Krakow’s fastest developing districts, so it’s no surprise that the Municipal Council organised a competition for the revamping and the so-called ‘revitalisation’ of the area below the Old Town complex.
Report by John Beauchamp.
The winner of the project was Krakow-based architectural firm Lewicki Latak, which proposed a simple project that sees the renovation of the surface and an additional terrace placed above the southern part of the square. In the eyes of Professor Andrzej Wyzykowski, the city’s chief architect, this was one of the best solutions, as many were worried that the square would take on a different atmosphere altogether.
However, people engaged in preserving the functionality of the square, which also serves as a market, have voiced concern over the project. Ewa Spohn, a member of the ‘Friendly Kazimierz’ Association, says that the new plans do not include space for the market, which takes place every day on the square.
