Poland is inundated with expressions of sorrow and condolences coming from around the world following the death of Marek Edelman - the legendary commander of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

Born into a Polish-Jewish family Marek Edelman was a prominent physician, a dissident during the communist period, a writer and a political activist. He was also one of the most respected Poles internationally. "A great man who devoted his life to the defense of human dignity and freedom", "a great personality of world history" and a "perennial rebel" - these are only some of the descriptions of Marek Edelman by world leaders expressing their sorrow upon hearing of his death.
