Poles would rather spend their free time watching television than engaging in physical activity while practicing sport is still considered less prestigious than any intellectual activity - shows the latest report on the physical condition of Poles prepared by an initiative called "Social Project 2012" three years before the European football championships which this country will co-host with Ukraine.
"The Social Project 2012" is an initiative of sociologists from the Warsaw University created to show Poles what they can gain - apart from the obvious benefits to their health or finances - thanks to organising the football championships. According to the findings of their research, interest in sport among Poles diminishes as they age, plummeting after they turn 25, start a professional career and a family. Fifty six percent of young respondents admit participating in physical activities - the number which drops to thirty five in the 35+ group. The situation looks even worse among the forty and fifty year old Poles which puts Poland in stark contrast with other European countries.
