Doctors on trial for Romanian hunger strike prisoner

Krakow courts are trying three doctors involved in the death of Romanina prisoner who died in January 2008 after a hunger strike in a Polish penitentiary.
State investigators into the case have accused three doctors of neglect and have put them on trial, which started Tuesday in the southern city of Krakow.
Prosecutors say that Krystyna M., former director of the prison infirmary, did not involuntarily treat the Romanian, Claudiu Crulic, until it was too late. Piotr S. stands, the chief surgeon of the prison hospital, and Katarzyna M., hospital director, stand on trial for not having made crucial, timely decisions to treat a man in imminen danger of his life.
On Tuesday, Krystyna M. and Piotr S. pleaded 'not guilty'.
Crulic, died in a Polish hospital on 18 January 2008 after authorities deemed his physical condition too weak to remain in jail. Crulic was performing a hunger strike while in prison after being arrested in October 2007 for theft – a charge Crulic refused to admit to. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims that its embassy in Warsaw was not informed about Crulic's refusal to eat. (mmj)
