Report on Poles abroad

28.12.2009
Many Poles abroad either don't speak Polish or have lose connection to the country - shows the latest report of Foreign Ministry

Danuta Isler reports

One third or about twenty million of Poles live abroad while seventy percent of them do not speak Polish, steer clear of the Polish communities there and have a weak knowledge of Poland's history - these are some of the main conclusions of the report on the situation of the Polish Diaspora and Poles abroad prepared by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Compiled by the ministry's Department for Cooperation with the Polish Diaspora, the 500 pages thick document attempts to give a comprehensive picture of Poles temporarily living abroad and the Polish Diaspora across the globe. It also contains recommendations which are to constitute the basis for the future policy of the Foreign Ministry on Polish communities abroad. Among them is stimulating their civic activities, offering Poles abroad much more assistance through a special interactive websitewith coherent information on Poland, appointment of the government's plenipotentiary for Polish communities abroad and more dynamic work of Polish consulates abroad.
