Prince Charles and wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, are to visit the 1st Armoured Brigade in Warsaw Wednesday, on the final day of a their three-day visit to Poland.
Yesterday, while 62 year-old Camilla was laid low with a back problem, Prince Charles visited the Tatar community in Kruszyniany, in the eastern parts of the country and the Białowieża Primeval Forest, inhabited by its famous bison.
Today, the royal couple is meeting troops who are soon to depart for a mission in Afghanistan. The military unit has been gearing up for the visit for days, say media reports. It is a distinction for the brigade, and attests to the UK’s appreciation of Poland’s efforts in the NATO-led mission, commander of the brigade, General Andrzej Przekwas told Polskie Radio.
Sixty one year-old Princes Charles and his wife will inspect military equipment and a demonstration of the soldiers’ skills. The royal couple will also meet troops and their families. Prince Charles stressed his appreciation for the work of the soldiers on Monday:
"As the father of two serving officers, one of whom has himself served in Afghanistan, I perhaps have some understanding of the immense challenges faced by the families of those serving in military operations overseas," His Royal Highness said on Monday.
Prince Charles and his wife will then attend a reception at Warsaw’s Royal Castle.
The three-day tour around Poland comes as part of a longer, nine-day trip, encompassing Hungary and the Czech Republic.
Meanwhile, the Polish government has confirmed that it will be increasing numbers of troops in Afghanistan.
The troops will number 2,600 as of April, as part of NATO’s new strategy, which entails training the Afghan military and police force. Passed by the government, the motion has yet to be signed by President Lech Kaczyński.
The current mission of the Polish forces ends on 13 April. The pending document provides for an extension of operations by another six months. (ab/pg)
