Competition - asolution to the country's rail system?

05.05.2010

Several dozen train cancellations have left travellers and commuters stranded on station platforms across Poland after the long weekend.

Danuta Isler reports

The cancellations - over one hundred  planned for the upcoming weeks - came as regional operator Przewozy Regionalne has failed to pay its bills for the use of train tracks, operated by PKP PLK.

Until 2008 all the railway companies in Poland were state-owned and the use of the country's railway system was clear. Experts agree that the decision to transfer of some of them to local self-governments created more chaos than competition.
