08.06.2010
One of the best known photojournalism exhibitions in the world has returned to Poland's capital. The winning photographs of the 53rd annual World Press Photo Contest are on display in Warsaw.
Danuta Isler reports
This is the 22nd time that the winning photographs have arrived to Poland's capital. Among them is the photo (left) by the Italian photographer, Pietro Masturzo selected as the overall winner depicting a woman shouting from a rooftop in Tehran on a night following the contested presidential elections in Iran.
This year t
here were no winning entrants from this country but in 2009 four Polish photographers scored the prizes often referred to as the Oscar of the Photography. Among the previous winners is also the photographer Chris Niedenthal born in London to a family of Polish WWII-era refugees. His picture of Hungarian communist leader Janos Kadar was awarded with the World Press Photo prize in 1986.
The 53rd WPP exhibition is on display at the centrally located Złote Tarasy Mall - for the second time in Poland’s capital for free - till July 1. Brought to Poland by EKPictures it had its Polish premiere in the western city of Poznan and will be shown later in Opole.
