Argentinean sacked as Polish volleyball coach

25.10.2010

Daniel Castellani has been relieved of his duties as coach of the men’s national volleyball team after a poor performance at this summer’s world championships in Italy.

The Argentinean coach had placed himself at the disposal of the Polish volleyball association (PZPS) right after the tournament in which Poland – defending its runner up position at the previous World Championships – failed to advance following second stage group match losses to Brazil and Bulgaria.

Castellani took over as Poland’s national team from coach Raul Lozano, also an Argentinean, in January 2009. After nine months on the job he succeeded in capturing the first European championship title for Poland.

He was honored for that feat with the Officers Cross of the Order of Reborn Poland by erstwhile president Lech Kaczynski.

A new coach will be selected only after the women’s world championships starting this Friday.   (ss)
