Italy and Poland - poles apart in scientific journals

14.01.2011

Research done by Polish scientists appears three times less frequently in international journals than that of German or Italian academics.

Magdalena Jensens reports

A survey conducted by Ernst & Young, entitled Scientific Productivity in State Colleges of Higher Education in Poland compared the contributions of 291 colleges from seven countries to journals listed in the Web of Knowledge at Philadelphia’s Institute for Scientific Education. Amongst the publications were prestigious journals such as Nature and Science.

It emerged that contributions from Polish academics appeared on average once every four years, the lowest frequency of any of the countries surveyed.

The Italians contributed most, with 79 publications, the Germans 45 and the Poles a meagre 23.
