Polish demand to change name of Auschwitz gets support from ADL
12.04.2006
The Anti Defamation League (ADL) has backed Poland’s proposal to change the name of the Auschwitz concentration camp to emphasise that the place was built by Nazis during WWII. The Polish government’s request to UNESCO to change the name from Auschwitz Concentration Camp to ‘Former Nazi Concentration Camp Auschwitz – Birkenau’ has stirred international controversy.
The Polish bid is a result of a chain of incidents in which international media have referred to the camp as ‘Polish death camp’.
The director of ADL, Abraham H.Foxman, a Holocaust survivor, said the League shares Poland’s concerns over the misunderstanding and references to Auschwitz as a Polish camp. He underlined that Auschwitz stands as monument to the barbarity of Nazi Germany and it is in the interest of historical truth that the site should be officially designated as former Nazi German extermination camp.
The Anti Defamation Leaguie has urged UNESCO to officially list the Auschiwtz camp as the Former Nazi Extermination Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
