Conjoined twins separated in Poland after one boy’s death

29.09.2007
One of the conjoined twins born in Poland two days ago has died. Surgeons separated the twins on Friday.

The surgery had to be conducted immediately for the surviving baby’s safety. His state is stable.

“The whole team of doctors worked hard. At the moment we are cautious optimists, but we still need to wait to see [if the operation was a success],” said Wojciech Beuch, one of the surgeons who conducted the medical procedure.

Aleks and Brajan were joined by their heads and after preliminary examination doctors were optimistic as the brothers had no shared organs, which was to make separation easier. Unfortunately one of the boys died.

The doctors are not sure of the reasons of the baby’s death. It could have been caused by circulatory failure. It is not to be excluded that he was suffering from congenital heart disease.

Doctors from the training hospital in Bydgoszcz were to decide if to undertake the challenge of separating the twins in two weeks time.
