Poland's ombudsman: striking doctors don't respect patients' rights

11.02.2008

Patients' rights in Poland are often not respected and even violated, said Poland's Ombudsman Janusz Kochanowski.

In his comment, Kochanowski was referring to the medical personnel strike, in which many doctors and nurses left the patients' beds. In one hospital it was necessary to evacuate a whole ward of newborns and pregnant women.

Patients have been complaining about this to the ombudsman as well as to the office of Patients' Rights at the Health Ministry, said Kochanowski at a special confrence organised in connection with the World Day of the Sick.

On 14 February, the ombudsman is planning to see Health Minister Ewa Kopacz to talk about possible solutions to the problems in the health sector.
