Romanian President Traian Băsescu dismissed the Romanian ambassador to Poland in connection with the death of Romanian citizen Claudiu Crulic, who died after going on hunger protest in a Polish prison.
Romanian sources announced that the president signed the dismissal of ambassador Gabriel Bartas on Monday.
The 33-year-old Crulic was detained on theft charges in September, claimed his innocence and went on hunger protest, as a result of which he died in a hospital in Krakow, January.
The family of the man informed that he sent many letters to the Romanian Consulate in Poland asking for help.
At first, Romanian authorities denied any knowledge of the detention and hunger protest. But during the investigation, it turned out that certain errors had been made. The Romanian consul to Poland Ioan Preda had already been dismissed at the end of April. (mo)
