The government in Warsaw has prepared its reply to the EC ultimatum on the fate of Polish shipyards.
Report by Slawek Szefs
The yards are threatened with bankruptcy because of the looming necessity to return state aid received over a period of several years. The European Commission has proposed the selling of the state-owned companies and creating new private enterprizes in their place. But even with Warsaw's consent to such action, amendments to Polish law are required to complete the process. Also, the Solidarity trade union is pressing for guarantees of retaining all workplaces in the newly established companies with a ship oriented production profile.
