Poles would elect Obama

04.11.2008

A prevailing majority of Poles would vote for the Democratic candidate Barrack Obama if they took part in the US presidential election.

Sixty two percent of Poles would vote for Barrack Obama. Only one in four would support John McCain, according to a survey conducted by GfK Polonia for the Rzeczpospolita daily. Professor Andrzej Mania, head of the American Studies at the Jagiellonian University, explains he is appealing mostly through the fact that it is easy to imagine him as a person who is trying to change something.

Tomasz Pludowski, American studies expert from Collegium Civitas in Warsaw, points out that fatigue with the republican’s rule and dissatisfaction with George W. Bush are popular across Europe. What makes Poland stand out is that this discontent is lower than in most West European countries, like for example the Netherlands – where 95 percent of the people would vote for Barrack Obama.

Professor Andrzej Mania is surprised that Barrack Obama did not find time to meet with Polish Americans – ironically this happened at a time when the mood among Poles living there seemed to be swinging from the Republicans to the Democrats.
