Obama tight-lipped on shield

12.11.2008

Poland remains uncertain of the fate of the missile defense shield on its territory as the US president elect avoids clear declarations.

Report by Slawek Szefs

Though the Polish-US agreement on the matter had been officially signed already a few months ago, the project received a negative appraisal of Barack Obama throughout the election campaign. Now, as president-elect he has remained tight-lipped on its continuation.

Analysts assure no major change in US policy regarding the anti-missile shield should be expected.

However, Polish uncertainty seems to be strengthened by opinions such as the recent interview of Franco Frattini for the La Republica daily, in which the Italian foreign minister suggests that the Obama administration should sacrifice the location of missile defence shield elements in Poland and the Czech Republic for the sake of good relations with Russia.
