WWF director in Poland Ireneusz Chojnacki carved a globe shaped cake and offered large chunks of the continents and oceans to journalists gathered at a press conference unveiling the organization’s latest Living Planet Report. The cake was excellent but the update on the state of the world eco-systems was not so sweet.

WWF warns that mankind consumes more than our planet can give us. And Poland can hardly be proud of its contribution. In terms of their appetite for the Earth’s resources Poles occupy the 33rd place in a ranking comprising 152 countries. The ecological footprint, which shows the extent of human demand on the ecosystems, is 4 global hectares per average Pole, compared with 9.2 global hectares required by average Americans, who top the list. In order not to harm the Earth, it should be 2.1 global hectares per person.
