Prime Minister Donald Tusk will hold talks with his British counterpart Gordon Brown in London on Monday, focusing on the energy and climate package, which the EU plans to adopt, as well as the global financial crisis.
Report by Krystyna Kolosowska.
Donald Tusk will strive to win Britain’s support for Polish proposals of a compromise on the cost of the carbon dioxide emission quotas, the Polish premier’s aide Slawomir Nowak informed. Poland’s coal fired plants produce 94 percent of the country’s electricity therefore the Polish government argues the tough financial terms proposed in the climate package would cause energy prices to soar and economic growth to decline. Poland has rallied other coal-dependent new EU members to oppose the original EU plan, which aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2020. Premier Tusk explained earlier this month that these countries want such a climate and energy package which would not threaten their economies.
