A Pole to head NATO?

03.12.2008

Two Polish politicians - Former President Aleksander Kwasniewski and current Foreign Affairs Minister Radoslaw Sikorski - have been mentioned as possible candidates for the post of NATO Secretary-General. Reports to that effect appeared in the German weekly "Der Spiegel". Official announcements are to be made in spring 2009 during the Alliance's summits in Baden-Baden and Strasbourg.

Former president Aleksander Kwasniewski said he would readily agree to such an international position while minister Radoslaw Sikorski denied to comment. The idea, however, met with enthusiasm of many Polish politicians. Several important seats in the international structures are up for grabs by Poles including those of the EU president, head of the European Commission, EU Foreign Ministers and NATO Secretary General. It would be a great success if Poland were to receive these posts - say commentators.
