Ombudsmen meet in Oswiecim

04.12.2008

Ombudsmen from 110 countries have come to the town of Oswiecim, southern Poland for a celebratory session marking the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The session organised by Poland's ombudsman, Janusz Kochanowski in cooperation with his Israeli counterpart Micha Lindenstrauss, has been held under the honorary patronage of Poland's president Lech Kaczynski and the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso.

Poland's ombudsman Janusz Kochanowski says after 60 years we need to return to causes and sources of this declaration. During the session Antonin Scalia, an American jurist and second most senior Associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States received the Pawel Wlodkowic award. It is granted by Poland's ombudsman for 'efforts in defending the basic values and truths often despite the opinions and views of the general public'.
