Polish-German intergovernmental consultations

09.12.2008

The consultations started with an eye to eye meeting of the Polish and German government heads. This is proof of the mutual trust of Donald Tusk and Angela Merkel and their declared will to arrive at concrete political solutions.

Report by Slawek Szefs.

The agenda of the Warsaw talks, though involving an impressive list of ministers from both cabinets, has been void of any general topics. Also, bilateral issues have constituted only a fragment of the consultations, the majority of matters being in the scope of urgent European and international problems. These included the climate and energy package, diversification of EU energy sources, solidarity within the Union as well as the EU's eastern policy where Poland aims at a leading position. Interest has also been displayed in positions regarding EU-Russia relations or trans-Atlantic relations after the US presidential elections.
